Mechanical Woes Thwart Promising Run at Fairbury
The 3L team traveled north to Fairbury on Saturday for their Modified Nationals event. A who's who of Modified racing as 83 drivers were on hand to race for the $10,000 top prize. Jeff climbed back into the familiar 3L machine on this night after several races in the #10. A new Mullins Race Engine was installed and ready to go. The night didn't start out well as Jeff qualified deep in his group. Starting ninth in his heat race, he moved up to sixth as only the winner advanced into the big show. Jeff was notified that he would be receiving a provisional and he would be one of the 29 starters in the feature and have a chance to race for the big money. He used the semi feature to test out the car as he and the crew made some adjustments. In the feature, the 3L rolled off 26th and as soon as the green flag dropped, Jeff was on a mission to the front! He moved up to 17th in the early stages of the 50-lap event but smoke would develop as the 3L went to the infield (under caution) to have his crew check it out. A hole was found in the oil filter, ending the night early. A disappointing finish to a night that looked promising as his car really came to life at just the right time in a marquee event. -- Sep 5

It was onto Saturday as the team made some adjustments to the car as well as getting some help from a Hall of Famer, hoping for better results. 47 cars were on hand again as Jeff was seventh in his qualifying group and this time transferred into the feature with a third place finish in his heat race. In the feature, the 3L started tenth and was on the move. Jumping to the top of the track, Jeff started moving up quickly as he found himself in fourth at one point before getting passed late to come home sixth. A dismal Friday turned into optimism for the future on Saturday. -- Jul 25

18th to 7th in Eventful Season Opener at LaSalle

The 3L team opened their 2015 season on Saturday night at LaSalle. The night started out well as Jeff was the fastest overall qualifier. In the heat race, he started third and was running in that transfer position on the last lap when coming out of turn four to take the checkers the car running behind him ran up and over the side of Jeff's car spinning the 3L machine around. The race was finished and Jeff went from advancing into the feature to a torn up race car and a deep starting spot in the consi. The team worked frantically to fix the car in time and got it on the grid in time for his last chance race (sans a hood). He started fifth with two cars moving into the feature. He was up to second on the second lap and took the lead and the win on the last lap to advance.

Passing was limited in the feature as the bottom groove was the preferred way around. Don't tell that to Jeff though as he started 18th and was up to 11th by the tenth lap. When the cross flags were shown on lap fifteen he was ninth. He moved up a couple more positions by the time the checkers were waved and came home with a seventh place finish. -- Apr 4
